What is the AI-TOME Translation?

AI-TOME began with a simple experiment: How well could AI translate the Bible’s original languages into clear, modern English? It started with Hebrew and Greek texts rather than an existing English Bible, and it examined the evidence behind each translation choice. That question shaped the project from the start.

The experiment started small, with a couple of New Testament books and a couple of Old Testament books. That let us test both languages, examine the results closely, and make an early judgment about the reliability of both the process and the outcome.

That also raised a question about what kind of translation AI-TOME should be. Bible translations are often described along a line between very literal, or “word-for-word,” translation and “thought-for-thought” translation. A more literal approach keeps the source wording and structure wherever English allows; a thought-for-thought approach reshapes the wording so the meaning reads naturally in English. These priorities differ, not on a simple good-to-bad scale.

AI-TOME aims toward the more literal end of that line while still using understandable modern English. The goal is to preserve important words, repetitions, images, and connections rather than replace them with explanation. Where a passage can reasonably be understood in more than one way, the translation does not try to settle the question unnecessarily; the notes can explain the alternatives.

As the experiment continued, the translation and review process was refined. The aim was to find a practical balance: enough checking to support a dependable translation, a manageable amount of time and effort, and notes that explain important choices without burdening the reader. That process became the standard described in this article, designed to pursue reliability, not to guarantee that every determination is correct.

The project became AI-TOME: AI Translation of the Originals into Modern English. The name also plays on the word tome, meaning a book, especially a large or scholarly one, a fitting connection for a project centered on the books of the Bible. It remains an experimental translation, and one limitation needs to be clear from the beginning: AI-TOME has not been reviewed by a human translator. Human approval to publish it is not the same as a qualified Bible translator checking its accuracy.

For some readers, the next question will be how the process works. For others, it may be whether AI belongs anywhere near Bible study. Both questions deserve a clear answer, not a sales pitch. This article takes that approach.

What “AI” Means Here

The AI tools involved are computer programs trained to recognize language patterns and generate responses to instructions. They can work with text, but they can also produce convincing explanations that are wrong.

That makes an important distinction necessary: something can sound clear, thoughtful, and self-assured without being correct.

In AI-TOME, an “AI translator” or “AI reviewer” means software given a particular assignment, not a human scholar, pastor, or member of a translation committee. The project separates those assignments into stages rather than treating one generated answer as a finished translation.

Scripture and Spiritual Authority

For a Christian reader, the concern may go deeper than whether software makes mistakes: Does using this tool give it a place that belongs to God, Scripture, or the church?

Treat AI-TOME carefully as an experimental study resource, not as a source of revelation, a spiritual guide, or a replacement for established translations. Reading a computer-generated explanation should never mean surrendering discernment to a computer.

You don't need to set aside your convictions to explore the project, and you don't need to use it at all. If using AI in Bible study troubles your conscience, this article is not an invitation to ignore that concern.

The purpose here is to explain what happens behind the text, what the safeguards attempt to do, and where their limits remain.

From Sources to English

The process described below is the standard workflow for developing and checking an AI-TOME translation. Each step serves the same purpose: move from source text into English while keeping questions visible.

Start with Identifiable Sources

AI-TOME works from Hebrew or Greek texts and the reference materials specified for each book. Where manuscript evidence is discussed, the project distinguishes electronic transcriptions, scholarly reports, and personal examination of a manuscript image.

The word “Originals” in the name refers to the biblical languages; it should not be understood as a claim that the project possesses the biblical authors’ original handwritten documents. The work draws on published Hebrew and Greek texts, language reference tools, and written records of ancient manuscripts, not simply an AI system’s recollection of what the Bible says.

For Old Testament books, sources include the Unicode/XML Leningrad Codex, a digital Hebrew text based on the Leningrad Codex, a preserved manuscript of the Hebrew Bible. Other Hebrew resources help compare readings and examine the language. Published transcriptions of relevant Dead Sea Scrolls fragments provide additional evidence where text survives. These transcriptions distinguish surviving letters from uncertain readings and words reconstructed by modern editors; a reconstruction is not treated as though it were clearly visible in the manuscript.

For New Testament work, sources include the Society of Biblical Literature’s Greek New Testament, an edited Greek text with notes identifying differences among editions, and Center for New Testament Restoration electronic transcriptions, which record the wording of ancient manuscripts. These provide specific readings to examine and compare, rather than leaving the choice of wording to an AI system’s memory.

For both testaments, STEPBible resources from Tyndale House supply word definitions and grammatical information to help evaluate what the Hebrew or Greek can mean. These are aids to translation, not substitutes for examining a word in its sentence and surrounding passage.

Using identifiable sources makes translation decisions easier to check and explain. It does not make every decision correct or remove the need for review. The project works from published editions and transcriptions; it does not claim to have examined the ancient manuscripts personally.

Before translation begins, the required sources must be obtained and checked. If necessary evidence is missing, the problem must be brought to the human maintainer rather than quietly worked around. The AI is not allowed to fill that gap.

Establish the Text Being Translated

Two AI reviewers separately examine the specified source-text questions before another role records the exact Hebrew or Greek wording the translation will follow. Unsettled questions are recorded rather than treated as certain. This keeps the translation grounded before drafting begins.

Think of this as making sure everyone is working from the exact page before discussing how that page should read in English.

Prepare an English Draft

An AI translator prepares a draft from that source text, following written instructions about language, consistency, and translation notes. The intent is clear modern American English that stays close to the source, preserves important repetitions, and does not force a single interpretation where the wording leaves a genuine question open.

The draft is not made by taking an existing English Bible and asking the AI to rewrite it. It is prepared from the designated Hebrew or Greek text with permitted reference aids.

At this stage, it is still a draft—not a finished translation.

How the Draft is Challenged

Five separate AI review assignments examine word meaning, grammar, context, consistency, and unsupported additions. Reviewers working at the same stage are kept from reading one another’s reports, so they do not simply follow the first answer.

Another assignment deliberately looks for a strong, evidence-based objection, even where the wording initially appears acceptable. The point is not to manufacture disagreement, but to ask whether something important has been overlooked.

Disputed choices then go to AI reviewers who select among proposed options and must give supporting evidence. Unsupported votes do not count, and unsettled questions that require human assessment are passed to the human maintainer.

This is not voting on whether Scripture is true. It is a procedure for weighing proposed translation choices, and agreement among AI systems is not proof of accuracy.

The workflow uses different AI systems for drafting and specialist review so one system is not simply checking its own work. That is a safeguard, not a guarantee: different systems can still make the same mistake.

Afterward, additional passes check readable English, possible imported assumptions, and whether the English still is consistent with the source. Making a sentence smoother is not permission to change its meaning.

Automated checks also look for problems such as missing verses and misplaced note markers. Those checks help catch structural errors; they cannot establish that a translation is accurate.

The Human Decision

Before publication, the human maintainer receives the proposed translation and the questions requiring a decision. That includes unresolved source questions, disputed wording, and important alternatives that need to remain visible in the notes.

The process requires human approval, followed by separate permission before the approved text is published in the live app. After publication, the book remains open to further review, so the workflow continues with fresh review rather than ending at approval. The same process continues after publication through later review, editing, and publication decisions.

That is a real approval step, but it should not be mistaken for independent professional translation review. Approval to publish does not remove AI-TOME’s experimental status or mean a human translator has checked its accuracy. The approved text enters the live app, where later review can still identify changes.

Review Continues after Publication

Publication is not the end of checking. Fresh AI reviewers examine a published book again, including one assigned to compare every verse’s meaning with established English translations. The review cycle begins again here.

A difference in wording is not automatically an error. The question is whether the Hebrew or Greek supports the meaning, and whether a note adequately explains a significant difference.

Proposed changes face a separate reviewer assigned to defend the existing wording, an evidence-based vote, and human approval. If the vote is tied, the published wording stays; it is not changed simply because someone prefers another expression.

For example, a reader comparing Ephesians 1:1 with a familiar Bible may notice that AI-TOME omits the words “in Ephesus” from the main text. Some ancient Greek copies include those words, while others do not. AI-TOME currently follows the reading without them, but the accompanying note explains both readings and makes clear that the question remains open.

That distinction matters: an unfamiliar reading is not necessarily an AI mistake—but it should not go unexplained. The goal is to show readers what the evidence says, explain the translation’s choice, and acknowledge uncertainty rather than present a disputed decision as settled. Continued checking includes revisiting those decisions and the notes that explain them.

What Readers can Inspect

When AI-TOME is enabled in the app, numbered markers open translation notes beside the passage. Those notes discuss wording, grammar, manuscript evidence, and serious alternatives.

Italics identify substantive words supplied to make the meaning clear in English; they are not there to add emphasis. The notes also show where a translation choice involves uncertainty rather than an obvious, uncontested answer.

The process records disagreements and corrections instead of treating the published wording as unquestionable. A documented process makes decisions easier to examine; it does not make those decisions infallible.

If you choose to read AI-TOME, read it alongside an established translation. Open the notes when something seems unfamiliar. Ask what evidence supports a choice, and bring difficult questions to trusted pastors, teachers, and people qualified in the biblical languages.

And remember that choosing not to use an experimental AI translation is also a valid choice.
